LinkedIn is one of the fastest growing social networking websites today. However, even though it is considered to be a social media website, do not think that LinkedIn is just another Facebook or Twitter. LinkedIn is a professional networking website that became available to the public in 2003. LinkedIn has over 225 million member accounts. LinkedIn is available in about 20 countries at the moment, but you can expect that list to grow. A lot of businesses have started using LinkedIn to recruit employees, but these businesses are not looking for any employee – they want to find the best people.
I will post several LinkedIn Profile Optimization tips over the next few weeks. While the tips and tricks that I will post here work in pretty any LinkedIn markets, it is US centric. Please consider different geographic requirements when it comes to your LinkedIn profile (as an example resumes look different in almost any country and that would be something that reflects how you want to present yourself in LinkedIn).
Here in the United States LinkedIn is market dominating in the professional networking field. Accordingly it is quite important to a) have a profile on LinkedIn and b) to have a fully optimized profile on LinkedIn – especially if you want to use LinkedIn to enhance your career.
I have been using LinkedIn since 2005. Over the years I started using LinkedIn more and more. As with most things that I start working with I spent quite some time to make myself familiar with it. And if I see a tool working out well and helping me with what I want to achieve I invest even more time. That’s what happened to me with LinkedIn. I started slow, but then things kind of accelerated. I started putting more effort into my profile and I watched closely how certain things suddenly brought more attention to my profile.
In my own business, I write and publish books, I do online marketing and also provide these type of services to customers. I also enjoy my work as an IT professional for a very large company here in the United States. Whether you work online or offline you have to pay very close attention to detail because a small change to a website can have dramatic influence to your marketing results. So, for me it was critical to have a LinkedIn Profile that stands out, but that also represents the two different professional options that I have to offer. I spent a lot time fine-tuning my LinkedIn profile and my online marketing skills certainly came in handy while doing so. I applied a testing technique (split-testing) to find out what works best and what changes to my profile do not do much for me. Since I applied these split testing techniques to my LinkedIn Profile the number of incoming targeted job and business inquires went up quite a bit.
As mentioned, In my other career I am an IT professional with technical skills that are quite in demand (Computer Virtualization). But when you are competing with thousands of other people for the same jobs on LinkedIn you want to separate yourself from the competition. That’s where my experience with marketing and LinkedIn really came in handy. The steady amount of job inquiries from recruiting companies and corporate HR recruiters showed me that I was doing things the right way.
In 2012 my LinkedIn profile made it into the Top 5% of visited profiles on LinkedIn (2013 results are not released yet), but based on the number of views I am seeing in my profile I should hopefully be again in the Top 5% on LinkedIn or maybe even higher (keeping my fingers crossed). But I am not gaming the system to show off, it is important to me that the profile views are actually related to my experience and my skills. It does not help me if John Doe finds my profile on LinkedIn. If Joe is looking to hire a chef or an accountant then I am not the right person.
As mentioned earlier, over the next couple of weeks a whole bunch of LinkedIn related postings will be published here. Make sure to stop by frequently and learn how to optimize your LinkedIn profile.
